Development of a magnetic Cu-based oxygen carrier for the chemical looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU) process

Chemical looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU) is an efficient process for solid fuel combustion CO2 capture. This requires a material that capable of releasing gaseous O2 within high temperature window. Screening was performed reactive CuO-based carriers prepared the CLOU magnetic properties easy separation from ashes. The effects CuO fraction, method preparation (with prior Fe-Mn support or by direct mixing Cu, Fe and Mn oxides) calcination conditions on carrier performance were studied. Three chosen owing to their good Cu activity, reactivity magnetism, fluidized-bed granulation evaluation in batch fluidized bed reactor. Two these, both 30% content, showed similar throughout process. One physically components Mn/Fe ratio 1:1, other using previously calcined support, mixed CuO. Both release, sustained magnetism redox cycles, addition low attrition rates no agglomeration problems.
